Building a Freedom Schools Movement
Our History, Our Education, Our Future
The Detroit Independent Freedom Schools Movement creates free, African-centered, loving educational experiences for Detroit children and families by mobilizing community volunteers and resources to cultivate community strength, self-determination, and build movement-based futures.
We are resolved to create an independent Freedom Schools movement in Detroit. Each DIFS session has two focuses:
- Tutoring in core subjects and skills;
- Engagement in learning activities that are inspiring and culturally enriching, which encourage students to strive to reach the full potential of their abilities and talents.
Our Freedom School sites are located at Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (315 E. Warren Ave., Detroit, 48201) and Cass Corridor Commons (4605 Cass Ave., Detroit, 48201).
